Hounds To Play For League Championship - Mar 20, 2010 by the Hockey Hounds

The Hockey Hounds have advanced to a 4th consecutive league final with a sweep over the number 2 seeded Southwest Rockies. The Hounds started the series off with a 5 – 3 win Wednesday night at home, getting goals from Dallas Mortensen and Nathan Voytecheck in the first period to take a 2 – 1 lead into the second. Holden Lamb scored the lone goal for the Hounds in the second, while affiliate Alex Barthel had the game winning goal at 15:39 in the third period. Cody Bardock added an empty netter to seal the win. Reed Vogt was solid in net stopping 40 shots.
Friday night in Pincher Creek the Hounds executed a typical road game strategy frustrating the opposition. They jumped out to an early first period lead silencing the crowd just 5:26 into the game on a less than hard point shot from Dallas Mortensen. The hounds added a power play goal from Shayne Eyre at 9:07 to take another 2 -1 lead after the first period. Momentum slowly started to change in the second with the Hounds spending time in the penalty box, but they managed to get out of the period without giving up a goal. Southwest’s power play goal in the third period meant the game was headed to overtime. In a very exciting period of hockey where both teams had chances to finish the game off, Cody Bardock took a snap shot from the point with 1:47 remaining in the first overtime period to end the game. Kyle Hart made 38 saves for the win.
The Hounds now await the winner of the North finals between the Wheatland Chiefs and Red Deer Elks, with Wheatland holding a 1 – 0 lead in the series which continues Saturday night. The series is likely to begin following the provincial tournaments this coming weekend. The North conference holds home ice for the finals. Provincials take place in Hobbema, AB beginning on March 25.

After giving up two goals in the first 10 minutes the club slowly picked away at Brooks’ lead to see themselves ahead 4 – 3 after 2 periods of play. Then the flood gates opened in the third period on Tylin Oka’s first of the contest. Nathan Voytecheck and Holden Lamb both had a multi goal game leading the charge for the visiting team.
The South Division Finals get under way Wednesday March 17th 7:30 at Henderson Arena, with game 2 going 8:00 pm Friday evening at the Pincher Creek Arena. Game 3 is scheduled to be played Sunday afternoon, 2:30 at Henderson Arena if needed.

Bantam AA Hurricanes Do Well at Own Tourney - Jan 26, 2010 by the Hurricanes

The Headwater Equipment Bantam AA Hurricanes went into their own tournament this past weekend full of hopes against unknown opponents and came out with very positive results.
The Tournament started on Thursday evening with the beginning of round-robin play and wrapped up with the finals on Sunday. In round-robin play the Lethbridge squad reeled off three consecutive victories before running into penalty trouble and a tough Rossland/Trail team to taste their only defeat of the weekend. The Hurricanes bested the Nelson Leafs 4-3 behind the strong goaltending of Aspen Pitre on Thursday evening. (Scorers for the Hurricanes were: John Symborski, Devon Jerome, Daylin Yanke and Austin Weersink.) Friday the 'Bridge' AA's defeated the Innisfail Flyers 4-2 and the Bozeman Ice Dogs 10-2. Jonathan Hogue did a fine job in backstopping the Hurricanes in the first game with goals coming from: Carter Francis, Jesse Wuerfel and two off the stick of Daylin Yanke. The evening game had Aspen Pitre back in net for the victory with goals by: Devon Jerome, Clay Vogt, Carter Francis, Jesse Wuerfel, Kieran McCormack, Todd Meheden and 2 each from Austin Weersink and Landon Gross. In their only loss of the tourney on Saturday afternoon, Lethbridge ran into a fast skating AA team from Rossland-Trail and went down to defeat 8-2. Jonathan Hogue played well in net but the B.C. squad utilized their power play (6 goals with the man advantage) to upend the Hurricanes. The Lethbridge goals came from Todd Meheden and Austin Weersink.
Teams going to the finals on Sunday were Rossland/Trail (4-0), the Camrose Bulldogs (3-1), the Sylvan Lake Lakers (3-1) and our own Hurricanes (3-1). Camrose was slated to go up against Rossland/Trail in the Championship Game while Sylvan Lake and the Hurricanes squared off in the Consolation Game. Camrose ended up winning the tourney with a 4-2 victory over Rossland/Trail, while our home town team took the Consolation with a 5-2 victory over the Lakers. Scorers for Lethbridge were Devon Jerome, Todd Meheden, Austin Weersink, Kieran McCormack and Braydon Jetten while Aspen Pitre was stellar in goal.
The Hurricanes now get a little rest after a fine 4-1 tournament before completing their final 5 games of the regular season and head into the playoffs. Go 'Canes go!

The Lethbridge Val Matteoti Golden Hawks hosted their annual AAA Bantam Tournament this past weekend with a total of eight teams attending from as far East as Winnipeg, Manitoba and as far West as Seattle, Washington. The Tournament got underway on January 21 with the Golden Hawks hosting Winnipeg in game one. Lethbridge came out on top with a 9-1 victory and were led offensively by Ryan Chynoweth with three goals (3-1-4) and two goals from Brett Tarcon (2-2-4), while Tyson Brouwer was very sharp in goal making 27 saves. On January 22nd the Golden Hawks hosted Penticton and came out victorious with a 5-2 win. Clay Spencer (2-1-3) and Ryan Chynoweth (2-1-3) each scored two goals in the victory while Goaltender Blake Alexander was solid in making 36 saves. In their final round robin game on January 23rd the Hawks recorded their third straight victory by defeating Richmond 6-3. Bryson Gore led the way offensively with two goals, while Gray Marr added a goal and two assists. With the victory Lethbridge advanced to the Semi-Final Saturday night against Kelowna and came away with a hard fought 5-1 victory. Clay Spencer scored two goals and added three assists to lead the Hawks, while Goaltender Blake Alexander made 17 saves. The Championship Final on January 24th featured a rematch of the round robin game against Penticton (who defeated Lumsden, Saskatchewan in the other Semi-Final). Penticton came out flying and were up 4-0 after one period of play. The second period saw a different Golden Hawks team and the lead was cut to 4-3 before two late power play goals made it 6-3 heading to the final period. Lethbridge closed the gap to 6-5 midway through the third period, but could not complete the comeback losing 8-5 with an empty net goal. Five different players scored for the Hawks in a losing cause (Brendon Benson – 1-1-2; Matt Rypien – 1-0-1; Cavin Leth – 1-0-1; Bryson Gore on a penalty shot and Ryan Chynoweth – 1-2-3). Congratulations to Penticton for their well earned victory and to the Golden Hawks for a great showing throughout the Tournament.

Bantam AA Hurricanes Win the Edmonton Bantam AA
Invitational Tournament of Champions – Dec. 31

After an up-and-down season prior to the Christmas Break, the Headwater Equipment Bantam AA Hurricanes put it all together in Edmonton from Dec. 27-31 as they won the Edmonton Bantam AA Invitational Tournament of Champions.
Not known as a high scoring team, the Hurricanes had to display outstanding work ethic, intensity and team spirit to go with strong defensive play as they went through the round robin portion undefeated with 2 wins and 2 ties. They defeated the Sherwood Park Leafs 3-1 (with 2 goals coming from Chase Bell and 1 from Nick Keith) and the Edmonton Real Estate Weekly 3-2 (goals coming from the sticks of Devon Jerome, Clay Vogt, and Carter Francis) while tying the Winnipeg Sharks 2-2 (scorers were Todd Meheden and Austin Weersink) and the Edmonton Brickmen 1-1 (the lone goal coming from Kieran McCormack). This set the stage for the 'Tourney Championship Game' against the winner of the other pool, the Alberta Sportswear AA Bantams (who went 4-0 in their pool recording 25 goals in the process). The title match was a back and forth affair with Lethbridge's Austin Weersink scoring in the first period and the Sportswear Team tying it up in the 3rd. The score remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and also throughout the 10 minute overtime. Lethbridge then completed their 5 day drive to the championship by outscoring the Edmonton-based team 2-0 in the shootout with goals coming from Chase Bell and Austin Weersink. Aspen Pitre and Jonathan Hogue, the Hurricane net-minders were outstanding throughout the tourney. They were originally slated to alternate in goal but an injury to Aspen in his 2nd start during a goal mouth scramble meant that Jonathan had to carry the load the rest of the way. Jonathan Hogue went on to be named Top Goaltender of the AA Tournament – great job, Johnny!

Congratulations to the players and coaching staff on this well-deserved honor.

Midget AA Introduction - Sept 4

I at this time would like to wish everyone well with the upcoming tryouts for their prospective teams. My name is Blaine Fomradas and I will be the head coach of the Midget AA team this upcoming season. I grew up in Lethbridge and played minor hockey, and was part of the LAA as a player in the program. I was a hockey prodigy in my youth setting several records and winning several awards along the way. I practiced as a 12 year old with the Lethbridge Broncos under John Chapman while playing AAA in town, the league held a lottery to my rights as a player in the WHL as a 14 year old with New Westminster Bruins winning my rights as the lowest seed. I played for the famous Ernie Punch Maclean the same fellow that was missing just a short few weeks ago. I played in the WHL at 14 for New Westminster and was rookie of the year and set a WHL record for the youngest player to record a point. I also played for Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Lethbridge winning the East division in the early 90s. As a player I was part of Candas under 17 program and 18 program playing for Bob Loucks and Perry Pearn at team Pacific. I currently serve as a consultant to several WHL teams in player placement and also am a scout for the Weyburn Redwings of the SJHL.As a coach this will be my third year as a head coach. I previously had coached Vauxhall Sabres A team to a undefeated season playing A and AA teams and zone and league titles, and won several tournaments along the way. Last season halfway through I joined the Taber Golden Suns and helped guide them to regular season south crown and finished second overall in the entire league. I have a developement 2 certification as a coach and have joined hockey Canada and Alberta to coach several teams this upcoming season. I also bring a powerskating background to the table having been taught by my sister whom also helped teach team Canada and the Lethbridge Broncos in the past. Shannon will becoming out throughout the year to help the team in practice. I beleive my knowledge and experience as a player helps when dealing with your kids, I have seen it all and understand what the next levels expect and how to make the kids ready for the jump in their career. I have mentored several kids the past 2 seasons and have had 9 of 12 kids drafted in the WHL bantam draft and also have the other 3 going the NCAA route. I am happy to say some of the kids I have helped have gone on to college in NCAA but more importantly have become better people in the process. The second member of my staff will be a common name in the LAA that being Devon Windle. Devon also holds a dev 2 certification and more importantly has the dedication and desire to move forward as a coach at he elite levels. Devon has helped coach the AA teams along with Jeremy Friesen the past couple seasons and is a wonderful addition to our team with his knowledge of the kids coming to tryout and his gift for getting the best he can as players, I am honored to have Devon part of the team and everyone will be pleasantly surprised with his knowledge of the game and love for the game. The third member of our staff is Coleson Friesen of Vauxhall whom will be going into broadcasting school this fall in Lethbridge. Coleson played for me in the past and was the best leader I have seen from all my years as a player and a coach. He wore is heart on his sleeve and came with the best effort night in and night out as a player. Coleson will teach kids what a leadership is and desire. Our goals for this team are simple win. Come in and work hard to the best of your talent level and you will play, do not you will sit and the guys whom are going hard will play. I treat every kid the same from the best to the worst. Every kid will have a role to play and I will teach them that role in order to be successful. I have an open door policy, anybody whom wants to chat please feel free to do so. This team will be disciplined on and off the ice. Our team will be the measuring stick of other clubs in the league, I have goals and segments to make sure we reach our goals as a team and a reward system. I look forward to meeting everyone and hope your kids are ready to play when the come to tryout.

Sunday Sept. 6 12:15 - 2:15 Teams TBA
Monday Sept. 7 11:45 - 1:15 Teams TBA

TEAM EXPECTATIONS -  Since the players are alll unfamiliar to the coaching staff, everyone will have equal opportunity to make this team. Come prepared with a positive attitude and the determination to give your best at all times. Players do not develop individually and must be prepared to buy into a team concept. To be successful players must all be on the same page and understand team strategy, discipline, etc. There is a time for hard work and a time for fun – both go hand in hand to be effective. As a coaching staff it’s important for us to be conscious of the fact they are still 13 and 14 yr. old boys. We also believe it’s more than just teaching hockey skills and knowledge but morals and values as well. Honesty, dedication and a strong work ethic – how to be humble in victory and learn from defeat.

STAFF BIOS

Lou Bardics - began in 1988 as an assistant coach with the Fredericton Canadians AAA midget program. Two years head coach position with Bantam A (minor hockey) and several years coaching various LAA teams including AAA Bantam, Midget AA and Bantam AA. Playing experience includes several years during the late 80's and early 90's with a Canadian Forces Select team representing Canada in tournaments and games versus other national teams and pro teams in Europe. Highlight was playing against Russian Red army team. Subsequently played on a semi pro team in Europe for a few years where some valuable experience was gained.

Mark Harding - Mark has several years coaching experience with minor hockey spending the last several years as a head coach with various teams at the Midget A level. He has joined the LAA coaching ranks for his first season this year and is excited about taking on the challenges and rewards that coaching at the Bantam AA level will bring. His previous years coaching experience will make him a great addition to this years coaching staff.

Taylor Perepeluk - Taylor is just starting his coaching career but has assisted his uncle Kevin Yellowaga (a former LAA coach) with several hockey schools and clinics the past couple years. He is an LAA graduate playing on various LAA teams from pee wee through Midget. His youth and enthusiasm are a great addition to the staff and he is eager to take on the responsibility.

MIDGET AAA MINOR HURRICANES INTRODUCTION LETTER - Aug 31

MIDGET AAA MINOR HURRICANES INTRODUCTION LETTER

On behalf of the coaching staff for the Lethbridge Midget Minor AAA Hurricanes I would like to welcome everybody to the 2009-2010 hockey season. The purpose of this letter is to introduce everybody to this season’s coaching staff as well as make everybody aware of what our goals for the season are, starting with the tryout process.

My name is Jeremy Friesen and I am currently entering the third year of my coaching career. The past 2 years I have spent in the Lethbridge Athletic Association, one season as an assistant with the Midget AA Hockey Hounds and last season I was the head coach of the same team. In my two years with that program, we captured 2 south division championships, 4 tournament championships, 1 league championship, 1 playoff championship and 1 Provincial Championship. I have grown up around the game of hockey my entire life and have also just completed my high performance coaching certification this past summer.
Also on the staff are Kris Deines and Steve Zmudczynski. Kris has a wealth of experience having played 5 seasons in the western hockey league with the Calgary Hitmen, Lethbridge Hurricanes and Prince George Cougars and has spent his last 3 seasons playing for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Playing both forward and defense during his playing career, Kris was an extremely versatile player not to mention being one of the toughest individuals to put on a Hitmen jersey during his time. While with the Pronghorns, Kris was known as one of the hardest hitters in the league as well as a vocal leader in the dressing room. Steve also has a tremendous amount of experience, having played in the Ontario Hockey League for several seasons with the Guelph Storm, winning an OHL Championship and appearing in the memorial Cup in Kelowna in 2004. In his last year of junior, Steve led the league in scoring with 49 goals. He also has played with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns for the past 3 seasons where he has been among the league leaders in goals and points in each of his three seasons.
All three of us are extremely excited for the season ahead and look forward to working with each athlete to help them achieve their goals both on and off the ice.

In the tryout process, things that we are looking for would be players who are flexible and adaptable, meaning they can play in any situation without taking anything away from their game. We are also looking for solid character players who on a continual basis bring grit, dedication and work ethic with them every time they come to the rink. We also want athletes who refuse to give up or quit, play with determination and purpose, and want to get better at the game. Last but not least we are looking for quality people.
Throughout Camp we will be challenging the kids in different ways to try and find these qualities in each and every one of them.

The coaching philosophy that we have developed and are going to impose on this years version of the Lethbridge Midget Minor AAA Hurricanes would be to make sure the players take away life experiences and lessons from the game so that they will become a stronger, more responsible and confident person later in life. The mindset of having your son grow up learning that you have to push yourself to succeed, you’ve got to fail often and persist through challenges in order to achieve dreams and that you have to dream big dreams to keep you motivated to move forward.

Lastly, our objectives for the season would be to provide equal opportunity to the 19 players chosen to represent the Lethbridge Hurricanes. We are not believers in equal ice time, but we are firm believers in equal opportunity. The harder an athlete works and the more time and effort he puts in to becoming a better athlete, the higher his reward will be. We believe it is valuable to facilitate a unique competitive developmental experience for everybody involved in the program as well as to prepare these athletes on and off the ice to help prepare them for the next level.

If you have any questions or concerns throughout camp, we can not emphasize enough that we are very approachable. We ask that each athlete feel free to speak to us at anytime regarding the tryout process and can’t stress enough how important open and clear communication is throughout the course of a hockey season.

We look forward to meeting all of the athletes trying out this season for the Midget Minor AAA Hurricanes and best of luck to everybody.

Bantam AAA Introduction Letter - Aug 26

Bantam 'AAA' Val Matteotti Golden Hawks Coaches Welcome

As a coaching staff we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2009/20010 hockey season. We hope that you enjoyed your summer and prepared for the upcoming hockey year. As a staff we are looking forward to the challenges and successes of the upcoming season. The Lethbridge Athletic Association has had success in the past and we plan on continuing this success into the upcoming season.

The four Bantam ‘AAA’ coaches include Ryan Epp, Matt Brunner, Andy Houthuys, and Chad Kletzel. Ryan Epp brings a wealth of hockey experience to the team. He has hockey experience that includes, minor hockey, ‘AAA’ hockey, AJHL, WHL and the University of Lethbridge, where he was the captain for four of his five years and took part in the World University Games. Matt Brunner also has valuable hockey experience that includes, minor hockey and ‘AAA’ hockey, AJHL and the University of Lethbridge. He has also been involved as the director and head instructor of the University of Lethbridge Men’s Pronghorn hockey camps and coached the Pee Wee ‘AA’s in Lethbridge. Andy brings his expertise to the goaltending position. His experience includes being part of LAA hockey growing up, goalie instructor for the Sutter Ice Hockey School and HPH (High Performance Hockey), AJHL, SJHL, and the University of Lethbridge. Chad Kletzel’s hockey experience includes, being part of minor hockey and ‘AAA’ hockey, AJHL, WHL and University of Lethbridge. He has been involved as a head instructor at the University of Lethbridge and Black Elk hockey schools as well as being an instructor at St. Francis Junior High School and CCH hockey academies the past three years. Chad had the opportunity to coach Bantam ‘AA’ in the Wheatland Hockey Association. All four coaches were part of the coaching staff of the 2008/2009 Bantam AAA team.

Tryouts will be a time of determining the different teams that players in Lethbridge will be representing. The Bantam ‘AAA’ team tryouts will be a time to demonstrate your ability and character. The main focus around the team in the 2009/20010 season will be player and team improvement. We are committed to working with players that are highly motivated, disciplined, coachable, demonstrate a good skill set, are looking to improve as players and individuals, as well as displaying a passion for the game. The expectation is that the Bantam ‘AAA’ team with be a hard working team that has purpose to their game. The coaching staff will have high expectations for the players and encourage all players to demonstrate their game in tryouts. We encourage you to give your best effort every time you step on the ice and we hope we have tough decisions to make during the tryout process.
We feel that tryouts are the beginning of the season and expect that players will be ready at the very beginning of tryouts. The coaching staff feels very privileged to be coaching the Bantam ‘AAA’ team. We are anticipating that players should feel privileged to be on the team and understand that making the team is just the first step to the season. We appreciate all the players trying out and wish you all the best during tryouts.

“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that
whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”
-Vince Lombardi
