AAA Midget squad sets franchise record
after 6-3 win over Calgary
It’s one thing to know you’re good, it’s another to prove it to everybody else.
Lethbridge Y’s Men Titans did just that this regular season and now they wait to take it to another level when the Alberta Midget Hockey League playoffs begin later this month.
“I think at the start of the year I thought we were going to be this good but it’s a pretty big accomplishment to shatter that record for the best Titans team ever,” Titans goaltender Drew Owsley said Sunday after the Titans closed out their record-setting regular season with a 6-3 victory over an out-of-control Calgary Royals crew.
Owsley played a big part in the Titans manufacturing a 25-4-7 record. The best mark in the South’s Chrysler Division amounted to 57 points, 11 better than the 1989-90 Titans who posted a 19-9-8 mark for 46 points, and Owsley posted a league-best 1.96 goals against average and 13 wins along the way. He’s excited about what lies ahead for his squad.
“We’ve got a winning record against every team and I think we can beat anybody,” he said, laughing off the Royals’ attempts to crowd his crease throughout the latter stages of Sunday’s finale.
“We saw the North at the all-star game and they’re not that good so we know we can beat them and we know we’ve got a pretty big opportunity here. I don’t think any club has gone to the Telus Cup from Lethbridge so that would be huge.”
The Titans head into playoffs on an 8-0-1 roll and enjoy a first-round bye, starting the post-season with a home game Feb. 27 at Henderson Arena.
Head coach Doug Paisley said his group is right where he wants them.
“We’re definitely playing well right now. This last little bit we’ve been on a roll and you look at how well we played going into the Prince Albert (Mintos) tournament and we won that. We weren’t playing well going into the Mac’s (Midget tournament in Calgary) and we faltered in that tournament. We’re playing really well right now so we should be able to step up,” he said.
On Sunday, Blake Gal had a pair of goals and Brad Ross, Brock Hirsche, Mitch Maxwell and Robbie Ciolfi all added singles as the Titans broke a 3-3 third-period tie, scoring three unanswered with the game on the line.
“We have had that other gear all year long,” Paisley said. “We have been guilty of letting other teams hang around a little bit and it’s not by design by any means. I’d much rather see us put five or six on the board and get it over with and bury a team early.”
The Royals (12-17-7) got goals from James Braakman, Alex Grieve and Evan Warner and will face a first-round playoff date with either UFA Bisons or Red Deer Rebels. They wanted to send a message to Lethbridge should the clubs hook up in the second round but the only one the Titans received was that they could easily take advantage of the Royals’ lack of discipline.
It’s that sort of focus that has Paisley eager about the opportunity that awaits.
“The difference between this group and last year’s group is this group has really bought in,” he said. “Last year’s, there were enough guys going to junior and enough guys thinking about what was going to happen after playoffs. This group is focused on the here and now and they know they’ve got an opportunity to do something special.”
Forward Darcy Osmond was a member of last year’s Titans, a team that was swept out of the first round of the playoffs. He gets just what’s at stake this time around and revels in the excitement of the moment.
“For sure it is, I haven’t won a playoff game in about three years so I can’t wait,” he said.
Neither can Lethbridge.

The Bantam AA play off picture still is murky, with teams in each division, where the top 4 enter the post season, fighting for position.
In the North Division, Airdrie, with 1 game in hand, is tied with Wheatland for top spot. Bow Valley holds down 3rd seed, followed by Red Deer Service Plus in the 4th, and final play off spot. Red Deer Steel Kings and Foothills are 7 points out of the final spot, with 3 weekends to go in the regular season.
The South Division has a clear front runner in the Lethbridge Headwater Equipment Raiders who have a 6 point lead on 2nd place Taber. The Southwest Rockies follow in 3rd place just 1 point behind Taber, while 4th place Cranbrook is but 2 points back of the Rockies. Brooks is still in the chase, sitting in 5th place but just 2 points out of 4th spot.
The SCAHL play offs will start the week after the regular season concludes, with the round one best of 3 required to be completed by March 2nd.
Weekend action for the Lethbridge Headwater Equipment Raiders
The Lethbridge AAA Midget Hurricanes completed a three game weekend at home with a rare Monday afternoon game. The Canes were host to the Royal Blue team from Calgary and battled to a 2-2 draw.
The Hurricanes spent Sunday in Medicine Hat and emerged with a 3-1 loss. On Saturday evening the Midget Hurricanes came out of Calgary with a 6-2 win over the Canucks. The Hurricane record now stands at 15-9-6 in league play.
Next action for the Hurricanes is next Saturday in Calgary when they will complete a home and home series with Royal Blue.
The LAA Midget AA Hounds have clinched home advantage throughout the SCAHL playoffs.
The Hounds played twice this past weekend and were guaranteed first spot before hitting the ice on Friday night against the Calgary Blazers. Colton Francis scored a first period goal to give the Hounds the only lead they would need and Ross Fox added goals in the second and third for a 3-0 win by the Hounds. Klynt Spencer picked up his league leading 5th shutout of the season turning aside all 26 Blazer shots.
The Hounds hosted the Cranbrook Ice on Sunday afternoon at Henderson Arena. The Ice came into Henderson needing a win as they are battling with Brooks for the last and final playoff spot in the South Division. The Ice had 3 games left and trailed the Storm by one point. The Ice scored the only goal of the first period but were badly outshot by the Hounds 16-8. The Hounds Rylan Wiest tied the game on a breakaway just 5 minutes into the second and Ross Fox blew a shot by the Ice tender part way through the middle frame and a 2-1 lead for the Hounds after two. The Hounds increased their lead to 4-1 when Fox added his second and Taylor Lenour scored for a commanding lead but the Ice fought back and narrowed the score to 4-3 when Brennan Foreman scored on a penalty shot with just over 6 minutes left.
League scoring leader Darren Andre put the Icing on the Ice when he scored a minute later and the Hounds skated away with a 5-3 win.
The Hounds are now 24-4, good for 48 points.
The Hounds have 4 games left, and will play Medicine Hat this Friday night at Henderson arena, game time is 8:30 and then host the Southwest Rockies on Monday night at 8:30 p.m. at Henderson. The Hounds wrap up the regular season with a game in Coleman against the Rockies on Saturday, February 23 and then are in Vulcan to take on the Bisons on Sunday afternoon.
The first round of the playoffs needs to be completed by March 2nd and the Hounds opponent will either be Brooks or Cranbrook.
This past weekend the AAA Midget Hurricanes traveled to Calgary for a pair of games.
On Friday night the Hurricanes played against the Royal Blue and had no one to blame but themselves for a 5-1 loss. The lone Lethbridge goal came from Kevin Hanna in the third with an assist to Patrick Holland. Hudson Mickey took the loss in net on a night where the entire team failed to deliver the effort necessary to win games.
On Saturday afternoon the Hurricanes delivered a slightly better effort but were still not able to pick up the win. The team salvaged a 6-6 draw against the NWCAA Stampeders.
Lethbridge scoring on Saturday came from Bryce D'Agnone, Adam Kambeitz, Nathan Voytechek, Cole Matson, Todd VanGaal and Taylor Makin. Assists on the goals were picked up by Brett Schafthuizen, Jovi Fabbri, Kevin Hanna, Adam Kambeitz, Hayden Shackel, Taylor Makin, Patrick Holland and Marty Wicks. Kyle Hart picked up the tie in net.
This upcoming weekend the Hurricanes are going to have to work much smarter if they are to return to their winning ways.
The team faces three games this weekend with two on the road and a home game on Monday afternoon at Henderson at 2:00 pm. The Hurricanes record in league play stands at 14-8-5 and places them in 4th position overall in the league.
